ESS is looking for a new Sound Engineering Fellow for Spring 2022 as we redesign our virtual offerings for the new year. Founded in 1986, Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to artistic evolution and the creative exploration of sound. As an international hub for sonic experimentation, ESS nurtures artists, heralds new works, and builds a broad, supportive community of makers, enthusiasts, and creative partners through production, presentation, education, and preservation.

Role & Description

Overview 

Experimental Sound Studio is searching for a sound engineer to be part of an inaugural Engineer Fellowship. The primary role of this position will be to provide artist tech support for the 2022 season of our virtual performance series, TQC (previously The Quarantine Concerts). Applicants must have live sound and web streaming experience, and be up to date on all the current technology available for creating quality live streamed presentations. This is a paid fellowship position that will allow for continued creative and professional growth while working directly with curators, artists, and ESS’ lead engineers. 

This position requires a high level of communication skills and the ability to teach complex technical details to artists with limited experience. 

This is a temporary, part-time fellowship position with the possibility of renewing for the 2023 season. 

Compensation is $75 per show with about 2 shows per week from April to November

Responsibilities 

- Consulting with the curator and artists leading up to the show in order to understand what they are presenting and providing feedback about the best way to achieve their vision. 

- Confirming that the artists are prepared with the correct skills to stream their content before the day of the show. 

- Being on-call the day of the show for tech support and chat room support. - If the concert is pre-recorded, being available to stream the videos on your own system the day of the show. 

- Providing any recorded media or archived material to artists after the show.
