ESS is looking for a new Marketing Intern for Spring 2022 to join our expanding marketing department and help us realize some long-term goals for engagement and community development. Founded in 1986, Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to artistic evolution and the creative exploration of sound. As an international hub for sonic experimentation, ESS nurtures artists, heralds new works, and builds a broad, supportive community of makers, enthusiasts, and creative partners through production, presentation, education, and preservation.

Role & Description

Overview

The Marketing Intern is a dynamic position to allow individuals interested in artistic sound production and amplifying the reach of ESS’s artists and programs. The intern will support the Marketing Manager in managing ESS's public facing image across all platforms, including but not limited to social, print, and web. 

The position requires a high degree of self-initiative, transparency, assertiveness, flexibility, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. We are a collaborative team who work quickly, creatively, and decisively with limited resources.

This is a temporary, part-time contract position with the potential to extend. Compensation is $1,500 stipend for the 4-month contract period or academic credit through an accredited university. This position can be either remote or in-person, with regular virtual check-ins with the Marketing Manager. Workload is anticipated at around 5 hours per week for contractors who will be taking the stipend, or may be more if required by the academic institution.


Responsibilities

The overarching goal for 2022 is to implement strategic marketing campaigns across our platforms, paid outlets, press outlets, and partner networks in order to gain visibility for ESS and the artists we work with in new markets and audience segments identified as specifically aligned with the interests and goals of each major program.

Website Management / Blog

  • Generate content and make updates to our existing Squarespace website

  • Update web pages with current artist and curator tags

  • Promote active engagement on the website through the ongoing creation of critical content in collaboration with ESS staff, artists, and outside writers and curators.

  • Work with Marketing Manager to implement strategic website updates in response to analytics

Calendar

  • Keep the public facing listings of all upcoming, current, and past ESS shows up to date across all platforms including website, social media, newsletter, and analytic reports

2022 Expected Outcomes:

  • In collaboration with the rest of the ESS team, work to connect the calendar to the archive and other editorial content across the ESS website and channels

Project Management

  • Organize and implement new iteration of The Quarantine Concerts, based around schedules of monthly rotating curators

  • Communicate in a timely and professional manner with artists, curators, graphic designers, and internal team to produce materials. 

  • Schedule tasks and posting out along a timeline

Measurement / Review

This role’s success is measured in effective ability to keep listings and ongoing media material updated, grow audience and membership numbers, as well as support other staff members in all communications activity.
