This year's WAVE FRONT artist-in-residence is Brian Chu Yin-Woo (龢wo4) from Hong Kong. Before the end of his residency in Chicago, Brian will play a solo improvisation set, followed by a short presentation sharing insights into the underground music scene in his hometown and the ways in which it has inspired the ideas behind his creative process.
Featuring a body of new works by Hong Kong artist Edwin Lo, Traces and Scenes – Homage to Akio Suzuki is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the US. Organized as a multimedia three-part essay, the exhibition presents how Lo retraces the memories of his encounters with the Japanese artist Akio Suzuki, condensing their influences, to gradually culminate into a new sonic performance practice that embraces uncertainty through intervention with a site.
In his performance As I have listened / Please chat with me, Samson invites the audience to respond, interact, and improvise with the evolving contents of his journey, using objects, texts, and simple instructions based on his experiences. This reflects his change of mind from a passive to an active way of adapting to a new place, and creates yet another new layer of his (shared) memories in Chicago.
