Over the years, the Creative Audio Archive has engaged artists, scholars, and curators in its collections. Additionally, in 2019, ESS Archives Manager Matt Mehlan began a series of Archive Dives that provided further context around items in the collections. Explore all of these deeper dives below.

Today's Dive is a special one as we memorialize the life of Harrison Bankhead, the Chicago musical legend who passed away earlier this year. Bankhead was a friend within the ESS community, and his work is archived across a number of collections in the Creative Audio Archive.

The Creative Audio Archive at ESS seeks your idle outdated technologies in need of a good home. We are in need of some (functional) transfer decks, and will graciously accept donations of (or funding towards) a Worldwide VHS Format VCR (Samsung SV-5000W or similar); Hi8 Video Deck; MiniDisc player; Video8 Deck; 8mm or 16mm telecine / transfer units; Mini DV Deck; Hi-Fi Cassette Deck.
As a part of the ongoing work of The Creative Audio Archive at ESS, we present Archive Dive - a regular newsletter featuring unheard recordings and ephemera related to the collections housed in the CAA. In this issue, leading up to his appearance on the OPTION series March 1, we present a selection of recordings related to musician and record producer Jim O’Rourke.
As a 2020 ESS Archive Artist in Residence, the interdisciplinary artist and educator Kamau Amu Patton created "The Past & Other Dreams", a double cassette produced by the artist in collaboration with the Creative Audio Archive at ESS, using material from the Sun Ra/El Saturn Collection.
In the first half of 2020 Marc Fischer of Public Collectors worked with Creative Audio Archive’s Malachi Ritscher Collection as the first remote Archive Artist in Residence.
The George E. Lewis ‘Voyager’ tape is a facsimile of the original tape, item # 11_FE_ESS, with handwritten label J-card and single sided label reading "George Lewis | Voyager, 5/10/89" from the ESS Collection of the Creative Audio Archive. It features a 27-minute performance of George E. Lewis and his pioneering interactive computer music program, Voyager.
