Fourth Horizon is a meditation on living in a city with water as a constant eastern horizon. Inspired by a theater stage constructed over water and an early commercial radio broadcast of a telepathy experiment, the exhibition explores the relation between the built and natural environments—and the spaces for imagination, connection, and alienation in daily urban life. Fourth Horizon incorporates sculpture, video, text, and sound into a process-based installation that meets Chicago at the shore of Lake Michigan.
ADA Radio is a new occasional and improvisational radio collective consisting of Brett Balogh, Jonny Farrow, Jeff Kolar, Milad Mozari, Jessica Speer, and Peter Speer. If you are on the north side of Chicago, tune in to hear these jolly noisemakers in their sonic frolic! Collectively concerned with voltages, frequencies, and modulations, each member brings a different sensibility to the group employing all manner of sonic manipulations, from analog synthesizers, to digital instruments, to live audio streams from far away spaces, hand-built oscillators, and other frequencies from across the electromagnetic spectrum. It is free-form radio taken to its extreme! Don't miss this noisy inaugural broadcast!
The Frosty and Frothy NRRF Pirates have found themselves and their trusty schooner locked on a course DUE SOUTH owing to a badly malfunctioning compass. As they approach what appears to be the frozen, southern polar landmass, they suddenly discover that their ship is no longer moving.
2012's Drone for the End of Time was such a blast that we've decided to make it an annual event in celebration of the winter solstice. In the same spirit of solstice celebrations throughout history, Solace is a 12-hour participatory drone conceived as a moment of respite from all forms of holiday chaos, and an opportunity to process all that has happened in the year that has passed; all are welcome.
Year 17 has arrived, the genus Magicicada are crawling out of the ground, and playing the largest noise show of all time. But there may be more than one genus of insect emerging from its pupa.... Join the swarm as insects invade the radio.
Radio has often been implicated in spiritualist encounters. We put the waves to the test and for otherworldly communicants, with all the safety precautions of exorcism at the ready. One brave (or foolhardy?) pirate voyages into the interior space of the radio itself, but will he survive?
Five jolly NRRF pirates set out to sea in their sloop to ride the radio waves. They quickly encounter a massive storm which diverts them into the Bermuda Triangle, where the ship is scuttled and underwater adventures abound, complete with creatures massive and minute, friendly and menacing. Finally they wash up on a remote island, and have to fend for themselves. This backyard radio event includes a cooking demonstration.
After a harrowing encounter with the Nebulaic Alliance, at which point they may or may not have been cloned, our intrepid NRRF cosmonauts leave the solar system to land upon a mysterious distant planet, enshrouded in fog and murk.
In 2013, for the 1,000,050th birthday of art, the Experimental Sound Studio hosts the radio collaboration NRRF Radio in the Audible Gallery from 2pm to 8pm, January 17 (GMT -6). Transmitting to the neighbourhood and the world via FM and stream (URL will be posted on day of).
A participatory 12-hour drone to usher in whatever happens after the Mayan calendar expires.
Using fabric as a connective device and social metaphor for this exhibit, Kristin Mariani examines the edges of internal cuts in cloth, areas intentionally perforated, and ruptures that occur as a function of wear and use as opportunities to create connections socially and materially. Frock Talk is a bring-your-own-content event, drawing from ruptures, connections, and binding processes where all forms of media and expression are welcome.
Fereshteh Toosi’s radio piece is based on a live public performance and investigating political involvement, malaise, and optimism. Red Crystal Palace was a mobile tent with a crystal ball inside, operated by a nurse seeking predictions about the future from people on the street. In exchange, the nurse shared free tea and red crystals with participants. Interviews were recorded in 2007: March 26 and July 21 in Chicago, April 7 in Los Angeles and May 6 in Washington DC.
