Black Lives Matter: Resources for Dismantling Systemic Racism
The list and actions below are being compiled from a number of different sources. Have a section or resource you’d like to add to this list? Email us at info@experimentalsoundstudio.org. You can also check out this very comprehensive and thoughtful list from Sixty Inches From Center.
Pro-tip: put on some music from this amazing list of Black artists on Bandcamp while you spend time exploring the lists below.
(1) Contact your legislators, mayor, and city council members. Our elected officials work for us and should know your views on policing and the current protests so they can make better decisions on policy, funding, and appointments. Call or e-mail today. Click here to find your legislators.
(2) Donate to and/or volunteer with an organization committed to dismantling systemic racism and helping communities heal and build. Consider making reoccurring donations if you can!
(3) Educate yourself with Anti-Racism Resources and Materials. All of the organizations below (not just in the Education section!) have excellent resources and opportunities to learn on their sites.
CHICAGO CALLS TO ACTION
10 Demands of BLM Chicago. Black Lives Matter has also compiled a list with relevant, ongoing petitions.
The Civilian Police Accountability Council (CPAC) ordinance is currently in the public safety committee in the Chicago City Council. If enacted, it will create a democratically elected Council to oversee the Chicago Police Department. You can learn more about the ordinance, sign the petition and see which alderman have signed on here.
CPS’s Remote Learning Policy does not allow students without technology to raise their grades. CPS parents, teachers, and students are calling for a more equitable CPS distance learning grading policy to ensure kids without access to technology are not left behind. Sign and share the petition to call for an improved remote learning policy.
Many Chicagoans are stuck without water during the pandemic. You can read more about this ongoing problem here and here. Blacks in Green (BIG) and the Black Chicago Water Council have been working to address this overt human rights violation.
