This lineup brings together faculty, students, and alumni from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) who approach sound from a uniquely architectural perspective. Whereas experimental music has typically explored the qualities of the medium of sound itself, these architects, designers, and philosophers explore how sound is capable of revealing the world, both the actual and the virtual. Through a combination of video and sound—3D and 2D modeling, sculpture machine learning, field recording, and synthesis—these artists examine how sound can enhance our physical interactions with objects, reveal the spacial interiors of buildings, and help us understand architecture as a temporal (rather than a purely spatial) form. Working at the intersection of architecture and sound performance, they exemplify how sound art can uniquely reveal the world, moving it beyond its usual preoccupation with medium.
