Doors At 7. Music At 7:30pm
Cellist Kevin Davis performs solo. A trio set with bassoonist Katherine Young and drummer Phil Sudderberg follows.
Kevin Davis is an improviser, composer, and cellist. Originally from Appalachian Tennessee, he spent his early career in the experimental music undergrounds of Chicago, New York, and Istanbul. His work, while rooted in acoustic improvisation, has grown to include experimental composition, cracked electronics, and multi-channel digital instruments.
In addition to playing cello and electronics in a number improvised projects and other bands (Restroy, Floom, Human Shaped Objects), Kevin had playes cello in the EcoSono ensemble, Null Set, and directs the Sonic Crafts Orchestra, an ensemble of hacked/constructed instruments. He has presented his music and software instruments at venues such as the Stone (NYC), Roulette (NYC), the Phillips Collection, Recess (NYC), conferences such as TENOR (Cambridge, UK), the SEAMUS (Society for Electro-Acoustic Music), NIME (New Interfaces for Musical Expression), and CubeFest. Recent performances of new music include festivals such as New York Electronic Art Festival, Open Circuit (Liverpool, UK), and the EcoSono Festival (AK). His compositions have been performed by the Hezarfin Ensemble, Dither, Ekmeles, Never Enough Hope, Chicago Sound Map, and more. Recordings of his music are available on Clean Feed, Contraphonic, Allos Documents, Creative Sources, Evil Rabbit, Re:construKt, Voice of Shade, and Parma Recordings. He is currently an instructor at the University of Virginia, where he teaches courses in composition, music theory, and music technology.
Katherine Young makes electroacoustic music using expressive noises, curious timbres, and kinetic structures to explore the dramatic physicality of sound, shifting interpersonal dynamics, and tensions between the familiar and the strange. As an improviser, Katherine amplifies her bassoon and employs a flexible electronics set up for solo and collaborative performances. The LAPhil, Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW, Ensemble Dal Niente, Third Coast Percussion, Spektral Quartet, Weston Olencki, Nico Couck / Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, Fonema Consort, and others have commissioned her music. She’s excited about coming-soon projects with Lucy Dehgrae for Resonant Bodies Festival, WasteLAnd and RAGE, Distractfold Ensemble’s Linda Jankowska, Callithumpian Ensemble, and Yarn/Wire. She’s releasing new music this year with Michael Foster & Michael Zerang, Wet Ink, and Amy Cimini (as Architeuthis Walks on Land).
