Of her modeling practice, which is represented in these prints, CHA MING says:

As an art model, I am no longer a creator, I am a muse, I serve to realise the other’s artistry.

As I shift my positions between the two, I understand the cruelty to be a creator, and the professionalism to be an artistry vendor. Dexterity in between requires being open to possibilities and being imaginative, while being strict to “what can be delivered.”

The freedom of reproduction,
The consent / individuality of the main subject,
What does it mean to be exploited in the usage under my consent?

Body affirmation to me has never been soundbite or conclusion, it is special to everyone and unique to every situation. So now I started writing down what I have been thinking.

… I am an art model. I worked in this field for over 10 years. I started this career for no noble reason, but now I have a lot to share.

… I chose to enter this career, because I was a working student, I needed a job that could work around my school and other jobs’ schedule, and being relatively high paid. My intention was as simple as that.

… Being able to labour for good will, serving for aesthetic purposes, those are the ideas that came later as I grew older.

Using the first 2 months of modeling salary, I went to Tokyo on a budget. This tiny bed I owned in the youth hostel, was where I grew to believe I could make a difference with my destiny.

… If being mediocre is what makes people anxious, then a model’s anxiety is no difference: too common to be seen.

… The nature of this job is to reduce the physical conditions of myself into visual elements. Mixing the discussion with advocacies is NOT possible to overthrow the core of the job’s nature. Eventually, we all have to face our own anxiety.

CHA MING premiered an exhibition of these works with her as an artist model at the MdW Assembly September 9-11.
