This series of free workshops will explore flickering territories, sound marks, thresholds, wandering and belonging through embodied and disembodied vocalizing and movement. The exercises in all of the workshops will center our voices as tools for producing space in relationship to other voices. The goals for all workshops are to develop an understanding of the space we take up with sound, using our voices as tools to explore space, resonance, group formation, territory, and boundaries; and to develop an understanding of non-verbal vocal communication through practicing and abstracting from non-verbal sounds.Come for one, two or all three, as the curriculum will build over time.

Workshop 1 on 11/16 will focus on non-verbal vocal expression. We will practice animal calls, echolocation, laughter, babble, cries, chanting, whispers and howls to develop a vocabulary for non-verbal vocal expression that will come into play in future workshops. We will use this vocabulary of sounds in games and exercises that establish spatial relationships with individuals and the group.

Workshop 2 on 11/23 focuses further on exploration of sonic spatial modes of inhabiting/dwelling, relinquishing, & overlapping through non-verbal vocal expression & relation.

Workshop 3 (date TBD) focuses on experiments with virtual presence and absence of the voice and body through tele-technologies: phone and radio. We will explore invisible territory of radio waves and electromagnetic fields, and respond to electronically powered speakers as prosthetic mouths and as markers of territory.
