Vylderness: Worldmaking through Modular Synthesis and VR

In this structured improvisation for modular synthesizer and virtual reality, Çamcı explores the continuity between abstract and representational sounds through various synthesis techniques including frequency-modulation, subtractive, and granular synthesis. Audio-reactive visual elements rendered in real-time using a game engine situates the performer in a virtual space through projection. This project builds up on the composer's audiovisual work Temas, which made its US debut at the Experimental Sound Studio as part of the Oscillations Series. The performance of Vylderness lasts about 20-30 minutes.

Curator Bio:

Anıl Çamcı is a multimedia artist and professor of Performing Arts Technology at the University of Michigan. His work explores worldmaking across a variety of media from electronic music to virtual reality. His album "Dekagon" has been recently released by Innova Recordings as part of their first national call. The album consists of electronic music compositions discussed in his book “The Cognitive Continuum of Electronic Music,” which was published by Bloomsbury in early 2022. Çamcı's work has been featured in leading conferences and journals throughout the world and received numerous awards and grants, including the NIME Best Installation Prize and ACM CHI Artist Grant.
