Artist statement

blue/lives: an ongoing installation at Chinatown Soup, 16B Orchard Street, during the Summer of 2020. 170+ drawings, 3D printed sculptures, video, sound.

The title blue/lives relates to the deadly equation the USA makes concerning law enforcement: the powers of the blue (which represents security and protection to many Americans) divided by the lives of dozens of unarmed civilians who die by the every year as a result of the deadly application of that power.

Working from police data, mainstream media, and independent reports, I will place drawings and topographic sculptures in the space. Each drawing and sculpture derives from Google Maps data, marking the longitude and latitude of every (officially) documented fatal encounter between an unarmed civilian and law enforcement officers in the United States, from January 1st, 2018, to the present moment.

1/64th scale 3D scanned human figures will be placed among the sculptures, posed and engaged in various activities: waiting for a bus, talking on phones, sitting on benches, protesting...

As part of this process-based work I will set up a livestream/podcast to speak to people who would like to talk about any issues or experiences related to the work, directly or indirectly. Please DM me and come on by to chat (or be 3D scanned).
