About the Chicago Jazz String Summit

In 2013, cellist/composer Tomeka Reid launched the first Chicago Jazz String Summit to encourage recognition, support and build an audience for outstanding improvising and experimental string players -- past, present and future. As the only BIPOC founded, curated and produced string summit of its kind, CJSS amplifies the development of new, 21st c. music informed by jazz, creative-improvisation and experimentation, and pioneered by Stuff Smith, Abdul Wadud, Michael White, Billy Bang and other notable string players. CJSS brings new audiences to the global community of 21st c. string players who are expanding the boundaries of artistic expression.

CJSS typically takes place the first weekend of May, with performances over two evenings. The Summit opens by recognizing and celebrating the contributions of a Jazz String Legend. Those honored, thus far, include violinists Michael White, Stuff Smith, Didier Lockwood and cellists Abdul Wadud and Akua Dixon.  Educating and connecting the community of string players is central to the CJSS mission, so we host workshops and masterclasses for string players of all ages, in partnership with youth-based music programs in Chicago and beyond; and we end with a jam session that brings all of the artists together.

Dr. Reid has been fortunate to cover most of the expenses associated with CJSS over the years. On behalf of the entire CJSS community, she is deeply grateful for the generous outpouring of support from partners, individual donors and philanthropic agencies.
