Every house has a door will premiere two short quarantine films made in Fall and Winter 2020-2021, developed from material from their indefinitely postponed live performance series Carnival of the Animals. This series of modular performance works follows the 14-movement structure of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 1886 musical suite for children. The Every house Carnival considers endangered and extinct species, with an original performance devised in response to each of Saint-Saëns’s titles, following those imaginative classifications. With sections of varying durations, media, and casting, Finnish artist Essi Kausalainen’s handmade costumes provide the visual/material common vocabulary, facilitating the celebratory transformation of human into hybrid entity. The intricacies of non-human life provide the foundation.
Aquarium (13:36) surveys an impossible ecosystem of three endangered sea entities, featuring performances by Bryan Saner as The Lesser Electric Ray, Elise Cowin as The Eyelash Seaweed, and Alex Bradley Cohen as Limestone, and the original Aquarium Song written and performed by Madeleine Aguilar, with lyrics from a poem by Ed Roberson.
Characters with Long Ears attunes to sounds outside of the human range of audible frequencies and those characters who hear them, featuring performances by Alex Bradley Cohen, Elise Cowin, Isaac Cresswell, Sky Cubacub, and Bryan Saner, with narration written by Matthew Goulish.
