About the Artists

TAMIO SHIRAISHI
Saxophonist Tamio Shiraishi began performing music in Tokyo's vibrant avant-garde community in the late 1970s. It was mostly at the club called "Minor" in Kichijoji, Tokyo, where he met Keiji Haino as one of his collaborators. Then in 1980s shiraishi participated the theatrical company named "Homo Fictus", also collaborated with performance artists, butoh dancers and various musicians in Japan. Shiraishi spent his early 1990s living and performing in both Tokyo and New York City, where he performed in public, at venues such as ABC No Rio, at the East River side in Brooklyn, on the street of Shinjuku, Tokyo. He also performed with various artists including the group "Crash Worship". In 2008, Shiraishi started an ongoing series of performances in NYC subway stations. Since middle of 1990s, in NYC, he has been continuing collaborations with many musicians and performance artists. Most recent collaborators include Gyna Bootleg among many others.

 

LAUREN TOSSWILL

Lauren Tosswill is an experimental performer and sound artist working with voice, sound, and movement to explore improvisation and vulnerability. Her work explores language as a means to complicate and undermine comprehension, construct absurdity, and engage in live, relational exchange with collaborators and the audience. Lauren is currently pursuing her MFA in Music/Sound at Bard College.

JOHANN DIEDRICK

Johann Diedrick is an artist, engineer, and musician that makes installations, performances, and sculptures for encountering the world through our ears. He surfaces vibratory histories of past interactions inscribed in material and embedded in space, peeling back sonic layers to reveal hidden memories and untold stories. He shares his tools and techniques through listening tours, workshops, and open-source hardware/software. He is the founder of A Quiet Life, a sonic engineering and research studio that designs and builds audio-related software and hardware products for delightfully encountering our environment and each other.

 

KATE MOHANTY

Kate Mohanty is an avant-garde saxophonist based in Brooklyn. Kate is an active member of Brooklyn's DIY music scene, continually committed to the process of improvisation. Disappear Here, Mohanty’s second solo effort, was released in October 2019 on friendship tapes. Kate’s albums are completely improvised upon recording. Mohanty's debut solo recording, The Double Image, was named to Avant Music News Best of 2017. Kate has participated in a wide variety of artistic projects, including scoring short films, accompanying dance and theater performances, and has appeared on numerous albums.  In 2011 Kate published a solo book of poetry entitled Back from Brooklyn.
