Peter Stampfel is one of the original "freak folkers," having done time in the infamous NY hooligans the Fugs, underground weirdo duo the Holy Modal Rounders, and the Unholy Modal Rounders with the renowned troubadour Michael Hurley. His combination of primordial roots music, stoned humor, and quirky stories galore, make the man a true legend.
KA Baird is a multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, and performer based in NY. Her live solo performances include extended vocal and breath techniques with electronics and psychoacoustic interplay. She creates a present tense sound with a vigorous delivery that seeks extreme release through physical exertion and psychic extension. She is one of the founding and continuing members of Spires That In The Sunset Rise, founded in Chicago in 2001.
Blues Ambush is a damaged power trio from Philadelphia, led by guitar shredder Ken Brenninger, formerly of Storks and Fully Glazed, and featuring Jesse of Elkhorn on bass and Dave of Jackie O Motherfucker on drums. The three kick up a raucous din, comparable to chooglers like Creedence and Canned Heat, but with an edge laid down by noisy Japanese bands like High Rise.
Joshua Burkett has been weaving outsider folk tapestries for decades, creating classic album documents like Gold Cosmos. Burkett's softly strummed and nearly-whispered ruminations both calm and unnerve. Joshua also runs the privately-pressed Mystra label out of his east coast headquarters.
Allysen Callery is a self-taught singer songwriter from Bristol, Rhode Island, whose delicate, mesmerizing sound has been compared to classic British folk artists like Sandy Denny and Nick Drake. Billed in Europe as “ghost folk”, her haunting vocals and intricate fingerstyle guitar work is timeless and enchanting.
Sunburned Hand of the Man is an Easthampton collective of malcontents with a revolving lineup, but always including Rob Thomas and John Moloney (Thurston Moore Band). Their compositions and instrumentation varies from gig to gig, but expansive sounds and subversive sentiments always prevail. SHoTM formed in 1997 from the remnants of the Boston psychedelic punk trio Shit Spangled Banner.
