La Experimental Experience is a serial sonic encounter that has continually evolved since 2005, emanating from Chile and extending across the world. It is presented by Santiago-based Productora Mutante (Ervo Perez), a prolific promoter and genre-agnostic curator of avant-garde arts and musical events. La Experimental Experience seeks to decentralize sound exploration and performance, showcasing experimental vanguard and extreme sonic tendencies from artists around Latin America and internationally as well. As such, this edition of the Quarantine Concerts comes to you as an exposition of curated virtual submissions transmitted from Chile, which is currently under a countrywide toque de queda, a curfew due to COVID-19.

Productora Mutante’s 23 years of promoting and producing underground music have traced a tumultuous timeline in Chile. The 1990s post-dictatorship era and legacy of economic austerity caused frequent social tremors, but Chile's relative wealth often belied the profound, tectonic tension of insidiously increasing inequality. The highly polarized country was positioned precariously over well-defined social and political fault lines when in October 2019 the Estallido Social—a series of massive demonstrations against social inequality—marked the beginning of a political awakening and called into question the long-held myth of Chile’s neoliberal exceptionalism. The uprisings and the calls of demonstrators continue to reverberate today, as successive waves of the COVID-19 pandemic add to the instability and uncertainty. Productora Mutante has reflected and responded to these seismic shifts, and the results show a sharp turn for the didactic, with many artists charting the convergent boundary of protest and performance.

Ervo Perez created Productora Mutante in 1998 to showcase punk and hardcore bands around Santiago, Chile, but the project gradually reoriented itself toward noise and electronic experimentation, musical improvisation, and sound art. In addition to hosting shows and events, Perez, a self-taught musician, sound engineer, and graphic designer, uses Productora Mutante to offer circuit bending seminars and other DIY workshops. Working alongside other art collectives from 2006–2010, Productora Mutante produced FOBIA (Fórmula Básica en Imagen Audio), a festival highlighting audiovisual art from South America. Perez performs and records music for his solo project Ervalizer, as a founding member of the free improvisation group Colectivo NO, and with the noise dub outfit La Golden Acapulco, among many others.
