For Outer Ear Gyre Ensemble will perform:
Darkness Dissected (2016) by Ruud Roelofsen - World Premiere; this piece was a gift from Roelofsen to the ensemble. Roelofsen's piece apparitions sur le noir was the first piece Gyre played together as a trio. After performing it for the third time at the Darmstadt Summer Courses Roelofsen sent them Darkness Dissected. It builds on the ideas in apparitions but takes place in a whole new world.
Composer Roelofsen will be in attendance, courtesy of fonds podiumkunsten.
tres ciegos (2015, Ed. 2016-17) by Santiago Díez-Fischer - U.S. Premiere, and the World Premiere of this arrangement (originally written for two percussionists and accordion, Santiago rearranged tres ciegos for Gyre.)
We are Predatory, Air-Breathing: Theme and Variations (2016-17)* by Samuel Scranton - World Premiere
Crisscrossed With Corrections (2016)^ by Bethany Younge - U.S. Premiere
This concert and the pieces by Younge, Díez-Fischer, and Scranton were made possible by a grant from Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
About Gyre Ensemble
A 'gyre' is a spiral or a vortex. In our ensemble we find this is an accurate way to describe what happens to sound as it is transferred between body—wind (Saxophone), machine-wind (Accordion) and cloud (percussion). Our purpose as a group is to develop new pieces and concepts for this unfrequented instrumentation. Our goal as humans who each come from different parts of the world—Germany, Spain, United States—is to collaborate and engage with composers and audiences in all of these regions. While we find ourselves in Basel at the time, we like to think of Gyre Ensemble as being transitory and baseless with possibilities stemming in every direction.
Gyre is:
Alejandro Oliván (saxophone) Stefanie Mirwald (accordion) Christian Smith (percussion)
