Description
Sounds From Chicago was a series of radio programs featuring audio works by Chicago artists commissioned by ESS between 1989 and 1992. The programs ran locally on WNUR-FM, WHPK and WZRD and were distributed for national syndication through independent broadcast cassette channels.
Program 9: Jazz/African-American Music curated by Douglas Ewart
Music Performed by Members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM): In 1965, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) was formed. Twenty-five years later it has lived up to its own credo, "Great black music: ancient to the future." Presented here are works by three AACM members.
Program 9, 34:00
- Bari Heavy by Mwata Bowden, features Bowden on baritone saxophone and Kazakayah Ben Ahmechshadye on vibraphone. Bowden has worked in television, radio, concert orchestras, and rhythm and blues bands, playing with such people as Edward Wilkerson, Anthony Braxton, Bobby Blue Bland, Muhal Richard Abrams, Rita Warford, Gwendolyn Brooks, and George Lewis.
- Rita Warford performs voice, recitation, and percussion in her piece Healing Prayer for Lucho. As well as concerts, recordings, and work in film and television, Warford has performed with Muhal Richard Abrams, Pharoah Sanders, Malachi Favors Maghostut, Kahil El'Zabar, Leroy Jenkins, and Eldee Young, among others.
- Douglas Ewart's composition Jamaican Bamboo features Mwata Bowden on clarinet and bells, Edward Wilkerson on clarinet and bells, and Ewart on flute and bells.
