Sounds From Chicago was a series of radio programs featuring audio works by Chicago artists commissioned by ESS between 1989 and 1992. The programs ran locally on WNUR-FM, WHPK and WZRD and were distributed for national syndication through independent broadcast cassette channels.

  • Kevin Henry, Untitled

Untitled by Kevin Henry is a text/sound/music montage related to his ongoing Bad Actor Series. Henry has performed extensively in Chicago over the past eight years as well as in Ireland and on the East Coast.

  • Robert Metrick, The Wandering Minstrel

In The Wandering Minstrel by Robert Metrick, a wandering minstrel provides a lyrical chronicle of his journeys through uncertain territories in the period between the Middle Ages and the 1990s. Metrick is a Chicago performance artist, curator, and composer. His operatic works have been frequently presented at galleries and alternative spaces in Chicago and on the East Coast.

  • Dani K, Untitled

Untitled by Dani K. is described by the artist as "the fastness or slowness of things. The creeping up of anachronism, the speeding ahead of ennui." Dani K., a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, lives and works in Chicago.

  • Suzie Silver and Lawrence Steger, Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

The final piece, Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder by Suzie Silver and Lawrence Steger, explores the "realm of departure through monologues and ambience." Silver and Steger, known collaboratively as Sacred Heart Productions, use performance, video, and spectacle to explore "that ever-elusive nature of desire."
