SFC Programs 1-2: Improvisational Music

Improvised Music in Chicago

Description

Sounds From Chicago was a series of radio programs featuring audio works by Chicago artists commissioned by ESS between 1989 and 1992. The programs ran locally on WNUR-FM, WHPK and WZRD and were distributed for national syndication through independent broadcast cassette channels.

Programs 1-2: Improvisational Music curated by Gene Coleman

Program 1, 30:15 (80-ESS-A)

  • Marilyn Shrude Evolution Five

The Chicago Saxophone Quartet performs Evolution Five by Marilyn Shrude, a work which involves the performers in specific choices they make during the performance. The Quartet is James Kasprzyk (baritone), Paul Bro (soprano), Wayne Richard (alto), and Roger Birkeland (tenor), joined on this piece by William Street (alto).

  • Gene Coleman Quartet

Gene Coleman's Quartet uses written instructions and graphic notation to guide the improvisation of the performers. Heard are Katherine Hughes (violin), Gwen Seminara (mezzo-soprano), Gene Coleman (bass clarinet), and Rross Feller (alto saxophone).

Program 2, 23:41 (80-ESS-B)

  • Phantom Ranch String Quartet

Phantom Ranch String Quartet is a free improvisation group which attempts to explore a wide range of musical styles from Xenakis to country swing. Kent Kessler, the group's founder, plays double bass, with Dan Scanlan (violin), Katherine Hughes (violin), and Eric Newman (amplified cello).

  • Liof Munimula

Liof Munimula, a free improvisation ensemble who use little or no pre-composed material, explore a wide range of sounds using an impressive array of instruments, including such invented instruments as Don Meckley's "Hydro-Kalimba" and Michael Zerang's "Tubaphone," with Dan Scanlan on trumpet, violin, and electric guitar.

  • Gail Gilespe

Gail Gilespe performs the final, rather surprising selection, improvisations on the lute based on Elizabethan songs. She is joined in several duets by August Denhard.
